Essential Question

Regarding your examples of military intervention in colonies, what were some of the results of those military actions?

  • What were the net results of the military interventions you chose?
  • How effective were the military interventions you discuss?
  • How do you define effectiveness in the instances you chose?
  • Which colonies gained independence after the military interventions you chose?
  • Were the colonies chosen better off after the cessation of the military actions chosen?
  • Do you think colonies were a good or bad thing in the post WWII world? (remember, there are no right or wrong answers)
  • How did human rights factor into the military interventions you chose?
  • Did the colonies upon which you focused become independent nations?
  • Did your chosen colonies become communist states? Immediately following the conflict? Long After?
  • Was there an instance of a state created by a former colony holder which thrived?
This list is not exhaustive, and please feel free to discuss any other ideas you have regarding things you want to focus your research upon.

Subject Matter: Military History Post WWII

Grade Level: Modern World History (Grades 9-12)

Lesson Objective: Identify instances of Military intervention in colonies during the 30 years after the end of World War II

You will be required to identify no less than 4 instances of military intervention by sovereign countries in their colonies between the years 1945 and 1975. Additionally, a summary of the action and the circumstances of the country after the military conflict must be included.
